The Naga Army of NSCN K (YA) has decided not to work under the leadership of its president Yung Aung citing various reasons. In a release to the press, the Naga Army stated that the decision was made at an executive meeting held on 8 April 2023.

The Army however affirmed that it would continue its service to the nation under the leaderships of Gen Kumchok, Commander-in-Chief and Lt. Gen. Thungching, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Naga Army.

The reasons cited by the Army for its decision are:

  1. The army claimed that it was unaware of the details of the ceasefire agreement between NSCN/ GPRN and the Government of Myanmar in April 2012, whereby Myanmar had sanctioned ‘developmental activities’ including 45 vehicle licences.
  2. It also claimed that a huge number of arms and ammunitions were stored in the armoury without the knowledge of the officers and the same were snatched by Myanmar’s army.
  3. The Army said that the administration system has ‘decayed’ after the death of former chairman S.S. Khaplang in 2017.
  4. It accused the management of misappropriation of funds.
  5. It claimed that the army officers remain uninformed about foreign diplomacy and foreign aid received by NSCN-K (YA).
  6. The Army maintained that the faction held meetings with other NSCN factions without its knowledge.
  7. Yung Aung refuses to meet with the 16 tribes of Western Nagaland and the state government despite several requests.
  8. There is misunderstanding among the people of Eastern Nagaland, the Army said.
  9. The Naga Army officers are not allowed to hold any meeting or conference.
  10. Top NSCN/GPRN members were expelled without trial or statements from the membership of Council.
