The Naga Army of NSCN K (YA) has decided not to work under the leadership of its president Yung Aung citing various reasons. In a release to the press, the Naga Army stated that the decision was made at an executive meeting held on 8 April 2023.
The Army however affirmed that it would continue its service to the nation under the leaderships of Gen Kumchok, Commander-in-Chief and Lt. Gen. Thungching, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Naga Army.
The reasons cited by the Army for its decision are:
- The army claimed that it was unaware of the details of the ceasefire agreement between NSCN/ GPRN and the Government of Myanmar in April 2012, whereby Myanmar had sanctioned ‘developmental activities’ including 45 vehicle licences.
- It also claimed that a huge number of arms and ammunitions were stored in the armoury without the knowledge of the officers and the same were snatched by Myanmar’s army.
- The Army said that the administration system has ‘decayed’ after the death of former chairman S.S. Khaplang in 2017.
- It accused the management of misappropriation of funds.
- It claimed that the army officers remain uninformed about foreign diplomacy and foreign aid received by NSCN-K (YA).
- The Army maintained that the faction held meetings with other NSCN factions without its knowledge.
- Yung Aung refuses to meet with the 16 tribes of Western Nagaland and the state government despite several requests.
- There is misunderstanding among the people of Eastern Nagaland, the Army said.
- The Naga Army officers are not allowed to hold any meeting or conference.
- Top NSCN/GPRN members were expelled without trial or statements from the membership of Council.
