Sheikh Hasina, the longest serving prime minister of Bangladesh, is set for another term after her party Awami League won the fourth consecutive general election. This will be Sheikh Hasina’s fourth consecutive term and the fifth in total.
Despite being boycotted by opposition Bangladesh National Party (BNP) the 12th General Election was conducted on 7th January 2024 and saw a very poor 40 per cent voter turnout. Awami League won 223 seats out of 299 while Jatiya Party got only 11 seats while independents won 62 seats.
According to DD News, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma called on Sheikh Hasina on Monday and conveyed warm greetings and congratulations on her victory on behalf of the Government of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
