Highlighting the importance of sparrows in maintaining bio-diversity in our environment and regretting its decreasing population in Indian cities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 116th episode of ‘Maan Ki Baat’ lauded the efforts of the Kudugal Trust in Chennai that has been actively working with children to preserve the birds.
“Some unique efforts are being made to bring back this lovely bird in the lives of such children,” PM Modi said of the campaign where members of the organization visit schools and tell the children of the importance of sparrows. He also said that the Kudugal Trust trains children to make sparrow nests and small wooden houses which are placed on the outer wall of any building or on a tree.
In the last 4 years, the organization has prepared ten thousand such nests for sparrows, the Prime Minister highlighted and said with delight that the initiative has helped the sparrow population to rise in the surrounding areas.
Similarly, he lauded a campaign called ‘Early Bird’ by an organization in Mysuru, Karnataka that prepares a ‘Nature Education Kit’ to create a sense of responsibility towards nature in children. This kit containing story books, games, activity sheets and jig-saw puzzles are distributed to children to introduce them to birds. On account of the efforts of this organization, children have started recognizing many species of birds, he said.
On this note, the Prime Minister encouraged the listeners of ‘Maan Ki Baat’ to come up with similar initiatives to help children see and understand their surroundings and preserve species of birds such as the sparrow.
