14 dead in Mumbai after strong wind causes hoarding to collapse

14 people have died after strong winds caused a 100-foot hoarding to collapse on a petrol pump in the Chheda Nagar area of Ghatkopar in Mumbai, Maharashtra on Monday evening.

According the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), 44 individuals were injured in the mishap of which 31 had been discharged after receiving treatment. It also informed that rescue operations are ongoing at the site on Tuesday noon with co-ordination among various agencies.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced 5 lakh ex gratia to relatives of the deceased while all the treatment of the injured will be done at the government expense

“The municipal administration has been instructed to investigate the incident and file a case of culpable homicide against the culprits,” Shinde said. The CM also informed that to prevent such accidents from happening again, structural audit of all hoardings in Mumbai has been conducted and instructions have been given to remove dangerous hoardings immediately.
