In view of the fragile situation in the districts of Dimapur, Chumoukedima and Niuland following the town/municipal council elections today, the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur Kevithuto Sophie, IPS, has ordered restrictions under Section 144 Cr.PC (Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973) (2 of 1974) to be enforced from 5:00 PM on 27th June 2024.
“… with the conclusion of the polling process, the law and order situation is normal but fragile; given that post poll violence cannot be ruled out,” the Commissioner has stated.
The Prohibitory Order is already in place since 25th June 2024. However, it will be relaxed on 27th June from 07:00 AM to 05.00 PM. The Order will be re-enforced from 5:00 PM on 27th June to 7:00 AM on 28th June 2024.
During such period no person shall:
a) assemble in group of 5 (five) or more people in public places within the jurisdiction of Dimapur Municipal Council/ East Dimapur Town Council/ Chumoukedima Town Council/ Medziphema Town Council/ Niuland Town Council.
b) hold and attend any public meeting, procession or any unlawful assembly in connection with election; or.
c) carry lethal weapons and firearms in public places including lathis, machete/ dao, daggers, sticks, spears, swords, catapult etc.
d) carry any kinds of inflammable objects which may endanger public life and property.
e) use PA system in any public places to cause public annoyance or disturbance.
The Commissioner also cautioned that any individual/ group found in contravention shall be liable for punitive action under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant Acts/Regulations.
