Following this, Sayangpong and Imsujungla delivered a special presentation. “Is AI a threat to humans?” was the first question asked of the participants in the highly anticipated Foundation Day lecture on “The Super Intelligence Threat – Can We Control AI?” by Er. Ngangsham N. Chemdok, Lecturer, Computer Science and Engineering, ICIT, Mokokchung.

The participants’ response was in the affirmative. He went on to discuss the three primary types of artificial intelligence: (i) ANI- Artificial Narrow Intelligence, (ii) AGI- Artificial General Intelligence, and (iii) ASI- Artificial Super Intelligence, where he pointed out that the AI that we currently employ is ANI (Artificial Narrow Intelligence), while the other two are merely theoretical concepts.

Additionally, he emphasized the applications of AI in everyday life, and also discussed on how AI assists education through lesson plans, emotion recognition in classrooms, voice assistants for learning, gamified learning experiences, educational podcasts and audiobooks, etc.

He mentioned that AI Improves creativity, but it also reduces original thought, limits deep exploration and also raises ethical concerns in Art and Ownership. Hence, he cautioned the audience of AI’s detrimental effects on human intelligence. He listed a few suggestive ways to reduce dependence on AI in the teaching-learning process, such as promoting own assignments, flipped assignments, splitting the assignment into multiple stages, using tools like GPTzero and encouraging originality.

He concluded by stating that humans are only at risk from AI if we permit it to do so, that is, if we become overly reliant on it. And that, we can control AI.

The programme was chaired by Sekulu Nienu, Assistant Professor, MCTE. Keleu Tsuhah invoked God’s presence, which was followed by an “Ode to MCTE” by Temsushijung.
