The first meeting of the State Level Coordination Committee (SLCC) on the 8th Economic Census was held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary, Dr. J Alam, IAS on 19th February 2025 at the Chief Secretary’s Conference room, Civil Secretariat, Kohima.
Secretary Economic & Statistics, Akunu S Meyase initiating the meeting said that the Economic Census is the head count of all establishments/entrepreneurial units and workers employed within the geographical boundary of the country with particular focus on non-agricultural sector.
Akunu also informed that till date, seven Economic Censuses have been conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in collaboration with States and Union Territories.
Meyase added that the 8th Economic Census 2025-26 will be conducted in collaboration with States and UTs using advanced Information Communication Technology (ICT) platform which would facilitate Geo-codes embedded data collection on mobile devices, real time data validation and scrutiny and interactive Management Information System (MIS) dashboards for monitoring and supervision.
The meeting was convened for identifying the mechanism in which the State indents to fulfil the requirement of contractual manpower & IT personnel and identification of master trainers. The meeting also discussed the activation of District Level Coordination Committee (DLCC) in the district and requirement of IT expert for each District to resolve IT related issues. During the meeting the department also briefed the members that government employees’ service will be utilised from various departments and they will be deployed as enumerators and supervisors.
During the meeting Chief Secretary urged the HoDs of the concerned departments to give instructions to the district level officials to provide all the support and necessary assistance wherever you are called for and asked all the DCs to conduct meeting and then start the census operations. CS also nudged the Department to use social media platform to promote awareness and sensitised the public on the economic census.
The Department informed that 1st week of April is tentatively scheduled for roll out of the 8th economic census across the Country. All members of the SLCC attended the meeting and a PowerPoint presentation on the 8th Economic Census was also presented by Economic & Statistics Department.
