Nagaland Governor La Ganesan graced the 1st North East Gorkha Cultural Festival organised by the Hamro Chinhari North East was held on 9th December 2023 at Singrijan Village, Chümoukedima under a theme “Hamro”. The festival was organised to provide younger generations with an insight into the vibrant heritage of the Gorkha community.
According to DIPR, the celebration showcased the rich tapestry of Gorkha customs, traditions, musical instruments and other enthralling activities.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Ganesan mentioned the rich heritage of the Gorkha community that has added much colours and diversity into the vibrant cultural landscape of North East India. For over 200 years, many Gorkhas have called Nagaland their home, contributing tirelessly to the nation as well as to the state, the Governor said. Stating that the Gorkhas have been part of the Indian army, he lauded the community for the significant contributions to the defence of the nation.
The Governor also appreciated their knowledge about cattle farming and other agricultural practices especially in the hilly areas which is well acknowledged by everyone. They have also actively been involved in the local businesses and service, thereby contributing to the economic development of the state, he stated.
Governor Ganesan stated that, this 1st North East Gorkha Cultural Festival is not just a celebration it’s a statement of unity and strength, a testament to the toughness and the unyielding spirit of the Gorkha people struggling to preserve our unique culture, language, and traditions in the ever-changing times. Such festivals strengthen our cultural identity and foster a sense of pride and belonging.
Further he said, as we preserve and promote our cultural heritage, the Governor urged everyone to also respect, learn from, and co-exist harmoniously with the diverse group of communities that make up this beautiful region. Moving forward with a respect to our ancestors by striving to promote and protect our heritage and to forge a tomorrow that our descendants will take pride in and strive towards progress while staying rooted in our traditions.
In conclusion Ganesan congratulated the organizers, Hamro Chinhari, for orchestrating such a pivotal event and thank each one for being the guardians of the Gorkha legacy. The Nagaland Governor wished that this festival may be an inspiration for unity and cultural pride, DIPR said.
At the opening of the program there was Lighting of Lamp and Homage ceremony. Other highlights included Cultural Dance performed by Khukuri Dance, Singrijan Khopanala Youth Association. Short Speeches were also delivered by Head GB, Singrijan. Khopanala Pradhan, President Nagaland Gorkha Association, Nobin Pradhan, President HCNEI, Brg SK Shukla, DIG 6 Sector Assam Rifles, MP Lok Sabha, Darjeeling (WB), Raju Bista.
The festival also featured the grand finale of Mr and Miss Gorkha Season-2 and Exhibition of stalls. Delegates from the States of Assam, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Darjeeling graced the festival.
