20th Annual Conference of CPA India Region, Zone-III Convenes in Shillong

Shillong: Speaker Longkumer underlined the pressing need for supportive policies and additional measures to ensure energy sufficiency

The 20th Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region, Zone-III, was successfully held in Shillong, Meghalaya from July 30th to August 1st, 2023. The Inaugural Address was delivered by Om Birla, Speaker of Lok Sabha.

The event witnessed the presence of notable personalities, including Sharingain Longkumer, Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, K. G. Kenye, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs & Power, Wezope Kenye, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary of Parliamentary Affairs, Khruohituonuo Rio, Secretary-In-Charge of the NLA, and several officials from the Nagaland Legislative Assembly Secretariat.

During the Plenary Session, Speaker Sharingain Longkumer actively participated in discussions on two significant topics: “Natural Disasters and Strategies for Management with special reference to North East Region” and “Regional Connectivity to bring North East Region at par with mainland India.”

Speaker Longkumer highlighted the importance of regional connectivity and stressed the need to bolster energy generation, particularly renewable energy, in the North East Region. Citing estimates from the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, he noted the region’s potential to generate approximately 129 Gigawatts of green energy.

The Speaker proposed that the Union Government, through the Ministry of Power, could play a crucial role by establishing special power purchase rates for power deficit states in the region. This initiative would enable states like Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Nagaland to utilize power purchase savings for enhancing renewable energy generation and promoting sustainability.

Speaker Longkumer underlined the pressing need for supportive policies and additional measures to ensure energy sufficiency and promote renewable energy generation in the North East Region. Strengthening the regional economy and connectivity were identified as essential components of the development process.
