30th Loyem Memorial Trophy 2022 kicks off; Astro Turf Ground inaugurated by Chief Minister Rio

The 30th edition of the prestigious Loyem Memorial Trophy organised by Chang Wedoshi Setshang (Change Students Conference) kicked off on 5 November in Tuensang under the theme ‘Goal for Friendship’.

Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, graced the inaugural function as the special guest and inaugurated the Astro Turf Ground.

Rio in his speech said the state can progress only if the youths are uplifted. Pointing out that every sport discipline is important, he said it requires full-time effort.

Discipline, commitment and dedication are required for excellency in sports, he added.

Rio asserted that the need of rostrum, gallery or stadium for sports striving youths could be initiated under Khelo India Programme, provided the state also sanctions in its part.

He also urged the 12 teams playing for the trophy to play with the spirit of sportsmanship, blending the quality of discipline and skill. He encouraged them to continue friendship for unity and strength.

“Naga youths can be promoted and should be known in sports activities”, he said.

Advisor Youth Resources and Sports Zale Neikha, while addressing the gathering, stated that sports teach discipline, respect, teamwork and helps in overcoming adversity. Neikha added that there is no favouritism in sports but it is rather defined by ability, skill, performance and sportsmanship.

“Sports need to be nurtured and taught at the grassroot level,” he added.

Toyang Changkong, member of the Legislative Assembly, while speaking on behalf of the Loyem family mentioned that Tuensang is the second district to have an Astro Turf Ground installed. This signifies the “love, concern and commitment” that the CM has for Tuensang, he stated.

Changkong highlighted that having a sports complex like such is not only for the benefit of sports personalities and athletes but for all. Sports can be one thing to divert youths from job saturation in Nagaland, he added.

The president of Chang Khulei Setshang (CKS), Nungsang Lemba, lauded the CM for taking great consideration for bringing development and facilities to the district. He also expressed the delight of the people of Tuensang on possessing and witnessing the inauguration of the Turf ground.

The president of Angami Sports Association (ASA), Lhoubeizo Kesiyie, appreciated the Chang tribe for being the first among the 12 tribes for forming a Wrestling Association. He assured that ASA would send wrestling coaches when required.

Kesiyie further extended a special invitation to Change wrestlers to be sent for coaching and further appreciated the Chang people for inviting ASA for a friendly match to be played with Chang Sports Association.

Earlier, the program was chaired by M Mongba Convener, LMT while the keynote address was delivered by C Pongshu, President CWS.

An exhibition match was played between Angami Sports Association and Change Sports Association, wherein the later won 2- 1. The league match will begin from 7 November.
