5 southern Angami villages conduct mass social work; call for maintenance of road

In a move to advocate for clean and green environment, student bodies of Kidima, Kezoma, Kezo- BASA, Kezoma Urban Station and Sakhabama came together to conduct a mass social work along a 25 kilometres stretch in the region on October 11.

President of Angami Youth Organisation (AYO) Kesosül Christopher Ltu said such events brings people together and promote unity among the youth. He acknowledged the importance of mutual understanding, forgiveness, and collective responsibility in driving development.

The youth leader underscored the need for young people to take ownership of community development projects and ensure that government facilities are utilized effectively. He also stressed the importance of holding officers accountable for their duties and providing them with necessary support.

He further said that as responsible residents of the villages, basic amenities have to be provided to officers and ensure that they performed their responsibilities.

He stated that in regard to contract works, the younger community needs to ensure that all the developmental projects are completed up to the satisfaction and requirement of the projects.

“We, as youths, have a huge responsibility in ensuring development and unity in our respective villages. The future belongs to the students and the youths,” Ltu maintained.

Southern Angami Students’ Union (SASU) speaker Keyoleto Noho mentioned that the mass social work has brought together five villages to clean up the area affected by the increased plying of cars and trucks. He said that their range is the only alternate route to Manipur’s Mao ever since the National Highway was affected by landslide at Phesama.

Highlighting the importance of maintaining a clean environment, Noho expressed that the sanitation drive aims to address the littering issue caused by passenger cars, buses, and trucks plying through the area. He called upon travellers to take responsibility of their waste and refrain from littering, promoting proper waste management.

He also appealed to the government to expedite the repair of the road since it has been serving as the only alternative route.

Kidima Students’ Union president Vikhruku Ltu also addressed the littering issue in the area, which has worsened since trucks and buses started plying through their village after a landslide affected the main National Highway-2 route.

He also mentioned that in order to combat the issue of littering by travellers, the five villages in the area have organized a social work initiative. He emphasised the union’s efforts towards promoting a cleaner environment and encouraged others to join in in maintaining the village’s cleanliness.

Kezoma Village Students’ Union information and publicity secretary Virakhoto also urged the concerned department to improve the road conditions citing that it has deteriorated significantly.

He also informed that the social work has begun on a 25-kilometer road stretch from Kidima-Kezoma-Kezo Basa-Kezo Urban Station-Sakhabama, with around 20-30 volunteers from each village.
