Six times Member of Nagaland Legislative Assembly and former minister, Kejong Chang passed away on Thursday morning at Dimapur. The veteran politician was officially 91 years old.
Late Kejong Chang was elected to the NLA representing Tuensang Sadar-2 Assembly constituency in 1998 election, 2007 by poll, 2008 election, 2009 by poll, 2013 election and 2018 NLA election. He became the oldest established MLA in India. He served as Minister for Horticulture, VGs and DBs. He was also the treasurer of NDPP Tuensang Sardar II.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed sadness over the demise of late Chang who he said “was not only a colleague to me but also like an elder brother to whom I looked up to.”
In a condolence message, Rio described late Chang as a simple, kind and compassionate man and a visionary leader who had long standing affinity with the people, especially those from the grassroots. Throughout his career, he tirelessly worked hard to uplift people belonging to the marginalized category of our society, Rio added.
The Chief Minister stated that the Chang community in particular and the Nagas, in general, have lost a father figure and a guardian. He offered deepest condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the State Government.
Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton too expressed sadness by the passing of the former Minister from Tuensang. He mentioned that late Kejong Chang dedicated his life to public service and that his contributions to the people of Nagaland will always be remembered.
Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from Nagaland, S. Phangnon Konyak stated that Late Kejong Chang’s extensive political career was a testament to his deep connection with the people and unwavering commitment to public service. His legacy is one of resilience, wisdom, and an enduring passion for the state and the welfare of his community, she added.
Konyak highlighted that late Chang was appointed as an Interpreter (Dobashi) under NEFA in 1949 and later as an Honorary Captain of the Village Guards in 1957. A recipient of four Governor’s Commendation Certificates and numerous other accolades, he retired from active government service in 1991. After joining politics, he won his first election as an MLA in 1998 and served in office until 2023, the MP stated in a post on X platform.
