Longwa Students’ Union (LSU), in collaboration with Longwa Village Council, 27 Assam Rifles Post Longwa and Village Guard Post, celebrated the 75th Indian Republic Day on Friday at Longwa Village. Amid the commotion regarding the sealing of Indo-Myanmar border, the highlight of the day was the participation of faculty and students of the Burmese School.

Earlier, the National Flag was unfurled by Tonyei Phawang, Chief Angh of Longwa in the presence of Maneesh Kumar, Post Commander, 27 Assam Rifles, Longwa and village elders, LSU informed in a press release. Other participants included students of Government Primary School, Government Middle School and the public. After the programme, a friendly volleyball match was played between the Assam Rifles Post and the villagers.

“The participation of students and staffs of Burmese School during the Republic Day Celebration at Longwa Village sends a message of Friendship and healthy relation between India and Myanmar along the border”, Longwa Students’ Union President Nahlak Wangnao and Manom Taiwangshu asserted.

LSU further mentioned that the people of Longwa have made efforts to maintain good relations with the people on Myanmar side and “also we make sure the relation is not hampered in any way” and stated that the decision of the Government of India to remove the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and fence the border “adversely concerns us”.

Pointing out how their village is divided between the two countries, the Longwa Students’ Union said, “we are constrained to oppose the idea of further separating us from our siblings by terms of putting up a fence along the border.” The students’ body has therefore appealed to the Nagaland Government to intervene and speak out “in favour of the Naga people living along the border.”
