The 8th Inter-Departmental Sports Meet for male and female categories commenced on November 28 at the Town Hall, Wokha. The opening ceremony was graced by Vineet Kumar, IAS, Deputy Commissioner Wokha, while the closing function is scheduled to be attended by T. Relo Aye, Superintendent of Police, Wokha, as the Guest of Honour on November 29.

Addressing the gathering, DC Vineet Kumar expressed satisfaction over the event’s growing scale and participation. He recalled that although the meet could not be held last year, it was conducted in March and has again been successfully organised this year “with greater zeal and involvement”.

He applauded the District Sports Officer and organising team for coordinating the programme amid demanding workloads and highlighted that the event’s core purpose lies in participation rather than competition.

“Winning brings joy, but the larger purpose is to take part,” he remarked, noting that the meet brings together regular athletes, occasional players, and even volunteers who step onto the field without prior practice. Sports, he said, offer a space for reflection and personal growth.

Stressing the importance of fitness for government employees, the DC reminded that sports contribute not only to physical health but also to mental well-being. “Many of us work under stress, and it is important to give due importance to physical activities,” he stated. He expressed hope that the meet would inspire a renewed interest in sports across departments.

Commending the increased turnout this year, he said the event’s success is significant as it is organised “by the department and for the department”, without external intervention. He urged participants to compete in the right spirit and take pride in the collective effort.

The programme was chaired by Rechalungle, EAC Wokha. Renbomo Ezung, ADC Wokha, delivered the welcome address, followed by a special presentation from the Youth Resource & Sports Department. Sedevizo Pienyü (PIS) administered the oath before the Special Guest officially declared the meet open.

Following the inaugural session, competitions began across various disciplines including tug of war, penalty shoot-out, chess, carrom, table tennis, and badminton. Officials from multiple departments took part with enthusiasm, showcasing strong teamwork and sportsmanship.
