9th Capt N Kengurüse, MVC, Memorial Football Tournament begins

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Wednesday inaugurated the 9th Capt N Kengurüse, MVC, Memorial Football Tournament at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, hailing the event as a tribute to valour and a celebration of courage, discipline, and the unifying power of sports.

The tournament is being organized by the 45 Assam Rifles in collaboration with the Nagaland Football Association (NFA).

In his address as the chief guest, Rio honored the legacy of Capt Neikezhakuo Kengurüse, MVC, calling him “one of Nagaland’s most illustrious sons” whose supreme sacrifice during the Kargil conflict continues to inspire. He described the late captain as a symbol of the Naga youth’s indomitable spirit and an embodiment of service to the nation.

He mentioned that this tournament is not merely a celebration of football but a tribute to Capt Kengurüse’s bravery, discipline, and unwavering dedication to duty. He urged young players to emulate the captain’s virtues, emphasizing that football unites communities and instills values that transcend the sport.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the state’s commitment to football development, citing the resounding success of the Nagaland Super League (NSL), which was recognized as the best new league in India. He announced that the second season of the NSL would soon commence with an expanded format and noted that astro turf grounds are being constructed in all districts to bolster infrastructure.

Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, GOC Spear Corps, also addressed the gathering, recounting Capt Kengurüse’s heroic actions during the Kargil War. He highlighted how the event symbolizes the strong bond between the armed forces and the people of Nagaland, uniting everyone under the motto, “One State, One Game, One Goal—United in the memory of a true Braveheart.”

The ceremony featured the unveiling of the tournament trophies, the release of a comic book on Capt. Kengurüse, and cultural performances. The Chief Minister officially kicked off the tournament, which will run until November 6.

Adroit Boys Sechü Zubza secures gritty opening win

Adroit Boys Sechü Zubza began their campaign in the 9th Capt. N. Kengurüse Memorial Football Tournament with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Tehok FC in the opening match.

October 23’s Fixtures:

  • Auyang FC (Tuensang) vs Lüshe FC (Phek) at 10 a.m.
  • Head Hunters FC (164 Naga TA) vs Detroit FC (Chümoukedima) at 12 noon.
