Village Councils asked to initiate selection of new members for next tenure

Consequent upon the tenure of the present Village Councils coming to an end in the next few months, and in pursuance of Chapter I, Section 6 clause (a) of the Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils Act, 1978, all recognized villages in the State have been called upon for selection of new Village Council members for the next tenure.

A notification from the Home Department stated that the Deputy Commissioner of the respective districts, in terms of Rule 3 of the Nagaland Village and Area Councils Rules, 1979, would issue the necessary notification containing directives to all recognized villages under their respective jurisdiction for the tenure 2026–2031. The selection of new Village Council members would be carried out in accordance with the prevailing customary practices and usages within 15 (fifteen) days from the date of issue of the notification.

The notification further stated that the entire process of selection of the new Village Council members should be completed before April 30, 2026. The proposed list of members of the newly constituted Village Councils is to be submitted to the State Government through the Office of the Commissioner, Nagaland for necessary approval latest by May 5, 2026.
