Strong winds, rain and hailstorm impact multiple districts in Nagaland; damage assessment underway

Over the past few days, several districts of Nagaland have experienced strong winds accompanied by rain and hailstorm, resulting in damage to residential houses and infrastructure.

Reports from affected areas indicate that multiple households sustained damage due to strong winds, while trees were uprooted in several locations, causing further impact on property. In some areas, disruption of power supply was also reported following the adverse weather conditions. As per reports received from the districts, several incidents of damage have been reported.

According to an update provided by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), in Chumoukedima district, as per District Situation Report (DSR), a total of approximately 31 families have been affected due to windstorm incidents reported from multiple locations including Piphema, Sovima, and other villages. Houses have sustained varying degrees of damage, including severely and partially damaged kutcha and pucca structures, along with damage to attached structures.

Infrastructure such as electric poles and community structures has also been affected. No casualties or injuries have been reported.

Assessment of crop damage and evacuation details are under process, and relief measures are being initiated. In addition, further damages to houses and shops have been reported from Piphema

and surrounding areas, and more reports are awaited from the district.

In Peren district, as per DSR, 15 families and one PHC have been affected due to flash flood and related incidents. Houses have sustained damage including 3 fully damaged, 8 severely damaged and 4 partially damaged houses. Reports from Pehlan village under Ahthibung subdivision indicate additional damage to houses, while incidents have also been reported from New Jalukie village and Ngwalwa circle.

Further reports from various subdivisions are awaited.

In Mokokchung district, preliminary reports received from ADC Mangkolemba indicate damages caused by the windstorm. Detailed reports are being compiled through the District Situation Report (DSR).

In Wokha district, damage reports have been received from Bhandari/Baghty area. Detailed assessment is awaited.

In Zunheboto district, the quarter of a nurse adjacent to CHC Akuluto was damaged due to strong winds.

In Tuensang district, damages have been reported from Longkhim subdivision, Tuensang town (Phingjang area) and Trumzong area, where houses sustained damage.

In Niuland district, damage has been reported from Yeveto village.

In Mon district, GMS Totok Chingha school sustained damage due to heavy storm and rain. Roofing of five classrooms and the Mid-Day Meal storage room were damaged, and food grains meant for the Mid-Day Meal programme were affected, disrupting normal school functioning.

The NSDMA, Home Department is closely monitoring the situation.

Citizens have been advised to remain cautious during such extreme weather conditions and to take necessary safety precautions.
