Governor reviews progress of Nagaland School Education Department

Governor of Nagaland, Nand Kishore Yadav on Monday reviewed the progress and performance of the School Education Department, at the Naga Bhavan Conference Hall, Lok Bhavan, Kohima.

The review focused on the current status of school education in the state, including governance structures, student enrolment trends, teacher strength and key initiatives aimed at improving learning outcomes and strengthening the education system.

The department officials presented an overview of the state’s education landscape, highlighting the number of schools, teachers, and students across government and private institutions. The meeting also reviewed ongoing reforms to strengthen data-driven governance through the Education Management Information System (EMIS) and improve monitoring and planning within the education sector.

Key initiatives undertaken by the Department of School Education were discussed, including the provision of free textbooks and learning materials for students in government schools, distribution of uniforms and notebooks under elementary education programmes and the implementation of the PM POSHAN scheme to support student nutrition and school attendance.

The meeting also reviewed progress under the Nagaland Education Project – The Lighthouse (NECTAR), a World Bank–supported initiative focused on strengthening school governance, improving teacher professional development, enhancing digital learning systems and promoting community participation in education.

During the meeting, officials highlighted capacity-building programmes for teachers and school leaders, including professional learning communities and digital platforms designed to enhance teaching practices and leadership in schools.

The Governor emphasized the importance of improving learning outcomes, strengthening school governance and ensuring effective implementation of educational initiatives across the state. He encouraged continued efforts to enhance the quality of education and ensure that government programmes reach students effectively.

Senior officials from the Directorate of School Education (DoSE) headed by Principal Director, Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) headed by the Chairperson, State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) headed by Director, Samagra Siksha headed by Mission Director and Nagaland Education Project-The Lighthouse (NECTAR) headed by Project Director, attended the meeting and presented updates on various programmes and reform initiatives.

The review reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening the school education system in Nagaland and ensuring quality, inclusive and accessible education for all students across the state.
