Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B Henok Buchem, NCS released the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules Handbook 2026 issued by PHED Urban Division, Kohima during a programme held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Chamber, Kohima, on June 5. The handbook, prepared in both English and Hindi, was distributed to representatives from 10 villages of Kohima district.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner said that waste was often disposed of indiscriminately in the past, leading to environmental and public health concerns. He informed that the Supreme Court has now mandated proper segregation of waste at source and that failure to comply with the guidelines is punishable under the prescribed regulations.

Buchem stressed the importance of adopting scientific waste management practices and creating awareness at the community level. He highlighted the four categories of waste segregation and urged village representatives to disseminate the information among the public to ensure effective implementation of solid waste management measures across the district.
The programme was attended by Executive Engineer, PHED, officials and village representatives.
