Minister for Power and Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye on Tuesday disclosed that Nagaland’s transition towards renewable energy would require collective efforts from all stakeholders, vendors and consumers and called for greater public participation in advancing solar energy adoption in the state.

Addressing a meeting of the Nagaland Solar Mission along with empanelled vendors, Kenye said solar energy remains a relatively new concept, particularly for the common people.

However, he emphasized that Nagaland possesses immense potential for harnessing green and renewable energy resources.

He noted that while people have become accustomed to conventional sources of energy over the years, shifting to solar energy would be an uphill challenge. He stressed that widespread awareness and active participation from the public, government agencies, and vendors would be crucial to successfully promote the new energy alternative.

According to a DIPR update, Kenye lauded the empanelled vendors for taking on the responsibility of spreading awareness and encouraging the adoption of solar energy to the consumers across the state. He observed that people in many parts of the country are already well aware of the benefits of solar power, whereas in Nagaland many remain apprehensive and reluctant to make the transition.

Despite the challenges, Kenye expressed satisfaction over the increasing number of solar installations in the state. He encouraged citizens to embrace solar energy as a reliable and sustainable alternative source of power.

Highlighting the benefits of the initiative, Kenye said rooftop solar installations would be made affordable and accessible, and expressed confidence that the public would respond positively to the programme and contribute towards achieving the objectives of Nagaland’s green energy revolution.

He further stated that the widespread adoption of solar energy could significantly mitigate the persistent power shortages faced by the state and pave the way for a more reliable, sustainable, and alternative source of energy for the people.

Chairing the meeting and sharing his thoughts at the meeting, Principal Secretary for Power, Dr KD Vizo, urged all stakeholders to intensify their efforts and accelerate the pace of implementation to achieve the state’s target of 10,900 rooftop solar installations under the mission.

He described the target as ambitious and emphasized the need to make the most of the opportunity provided under the Government of India’s solar programme. He highlighted that the initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7, which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

Dr Vizo said the programme would not only increase renewable energy generation in the state but also help address energy-related challenges, reduce electricity expenses for consumers, and contribute to the overall development of Nagaland.

Emphasizing the importance of collective action, he stated that development is not the responsibility of the government alone and called upon the private sector, vendors, and the public to actively participate in the mission. He assured stakeholders of the department’s support in resolving challenges and facilitating the smooth implementation of the programme

He further added that the Solar Mission is a joint mission and that everyone must join hands and contribute towards achieving the state’s rooftop solar installation targets. According to him, only through collective effort and cooperation can Nagaland successfully realize its vision of a sustainable and energy-secure future.

During discussion hour vendors highlighted and shared their area of concern and challenges.

Minister for Power, Parliamentary Affairs, KG Kenye hand over certificate of appreciation to the top three best performing vendors namely Elmechent, Aboriginal, Symbios Green Energy at the meeting.

Members of the Solar Mission Cell (Secretariat), the Solar Mission Team (Directorate) led by the Team Leader, and all empanelled vendors attended the meeting.
