The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Mokokchung, has intensified relief and restoration measures following widespread damage caused by incessant rainfall on July 18–19 and subsequent thunderstorms, which triggered landslides, mudslides, flooding and waterlogging across the district.
According to Deputy Commissioner and DDMA Chairman Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, the worst-hit area was Tuli sub-division, where severe flooding and landslides displaced residents from low-lying areas and disrupted road, telecom, power, water supply and internet connectivity.
The district administration, in coordination with line departments, immediately launched relief operations, including the distribution of relief materials, establishment of relief camps, deployment of water tankers for drinking water supply and flood clean-up, restoration of telecom services, and setting up of medical camps. Mobile medical units have also been activated, essential medicines dispatched from Mokokchung headquarters, and health workers deployed to prevent outbreaks of vector-borne diseases through surveillance and awareness campaigns.
The administration reported that National Highway-02, connecting Mokokchung to Amguri via Tuli, has suffered extensive damage due to multiple landslides. Major breaches have occurred between Chuchuyimlang and Unger villages, and along the stretch between Tuli Town and Tzudikong, completely disrupting interstate connectivity.
To maintain the movement of commuters and essential commodities, NH-702D connecting Mokokchung to Mariani is currently serving as the district’s primary lifeline. The district administration, along with PWD (NH) and other stakeholders, has imposed traffic restrictions to ensure the route remains operational.

Road connectivity to Mon and Longleng districts has also been severely affected. Restoration work is underway on the Changtongya–Longleng, Merangkong–Tamlu, and other damaged roads with the support of NHIDCL and PWD (R&B). Authorities are also working to restore road access to Salulamang and Yajang C villages, which remain cut off.
Water supply systems have been disrupted in several areas, particularly in Tuli, with the Public Health Engineering Department undertaking repairs to damaged pipelines. Power transmission lines, especially those serving villages under Chuchuyimlang Administrative Circle, have also been damaged, and restoration work is in progress.
To strengthen disaster response, Area Administrative Officers have been designated as Incident Commanders in their respective jurisdictions, while the District Emergency Operation Centre has been activated to coordinate emergency response. Measures have also been taken to ensure an uninterrupted supply of essential commodities.
The DDMA expressed appreciation to administrative officers, government departments, security agencies, civil society organisations, village councils, town functionaries and volunteers for their timely support during the crisis.
The authority also acknowledged the guidance and support of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and the State Government under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for releasing an initial ₹36 lakh under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to support immediate relief and restoration activities in Mokokchung district.
