The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the investigation into the Khopanala explosion case that occurred in Chümoukedima district earlier this month, following a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India.

According to the Nagaland Police Headquarters (PHQ), the Government of Nagaland has been informed that the MHA, through a communication dated July 27, 2026, has entrusted the investigation of the explosion case registered at Chümoukedima Police Station to the NIA.

The case pertains to the explosion that took place at Khopanala, Chümoukedima Village, on July 13, 2026.

The Centre stated that, after examining the matter, it was of the opinion that a scheduled offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, had been committed. Exercising its powers under Section 6(5) read with Section 8 of the Act, the Central Government directed the NIA to assume responsibility for the investigation, citing the gravity of the offence and its implications for national security.

Nagaland Police said the State Government and the Nagaland Police would coordinate closely with the NIA to facilitate the formal handover of the case and ensure compliance with all legal procedures.
