The NSCN/GPRN (YA) and ULFA(I) have jointly called for a boycott of the Independence Day celebrations scheduled for August 15, 2026, in what they described as “Wesean” territory, including parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland.

In a joint statement, the groups said they were categorically opposed to the celebration of what they termed the “imposed Indian Independence Day”, arguing that the observance represented continued political domination and suppression of indigenous peoples.

The statement alleged that compelling indigenous communities to participate in Independence Day celebrations amounted to a “celebration of colonialism” and described the event as an instrument of psychological subjugation.

The groups claimed that the people they identify as “Weseans” have a distinct history, identity, culture and ancestral connection to their land, and argued that their present political status did not make them Indian.

They further asserted that freedom, justice, equality and respect for human rights were universal principles that should prevail over what they described as colonialism, occupation and oppression.

The NSCN/GPRN and ULFA(I) said they remained committed to what they described as a struggle to defend their land, people and collective future, while characterising their activities as a movement for liberation rather than destruction.

The groups called upon people in the areas covered by the statement to remain indoors on August 15 as a “powerful and dignified show of solidarity”.

They said the proposed boycott would be observed in the “so-called states” of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland, and urged what they called freedom-loving people to demonstrate solidarity with their cause.
