The Kohima Chakhesang Students’ Union (KCSU) has withdrawn its participation from the Independence Day programme scheduled for August 15, citing the directive issued by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) against compulsory observance and singing of the revised National Song Vande Mataram.

In a letter addressed to the Director of the Art & Culture Department, Government of Nagaland, the KCSU said its decision was taken in reference to the NSF notification dated August 12, 2026, opposing any form of compulsory observance or singing of Vande Mataram during official functions and in educational institutions.

The KCSU stated that, as a subordinate unit of the NSF, it was firmly committed to complying with the Federation’s directive.

“Therefore, in solidarity with the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and in strict adherence to their mandate, the Kohima Chakhesang Students’ Union (KCSU) respectfully withdraws our participation from the Independence Day Programme,” the Union stated.

The KCSU conveyed its decision to the Art & Culture Department while reiterating its solidarity with the NSF.
