All Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) in Kohima District have been directed to register themselves with the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) within 30 days from the date of issue of the circular, in compliance with the directives of the Supreme Court and the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.

According to a circular issued by Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B Henok Buchem, NCS on September 11, institutions and establishments including educational institutions, government departments, convention centres, public and private sector companies, local bodies, hotels, hospitals, wholesale markets, industrial units and stadiums will be considered Bulk Waste Generators if they meet any of the specified criteria.

The criteria include buildings having a floor area of 20,000 square metres or above, water consumption of 40,000 litres per day, or generation of 100 kg or more of solid waste per day.

The circular stated that all BWGs are required to collect and hand over dry, sanitary and special-care waste to the local body. Wet waste may be collected and processed through composting, biomethanation or any other approved technology.

It further warned that non-compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 may invite consequences, including temporary disconnection of power or water supply until the waste generated by BWGs conforms to the prescribed rules.

For registration with KMC through the centralised portal, BWGs have been advised to contact 8257852860 or visit the KMC office at the earliest.
