The Department of Engineering & Technology, University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), observed National Engineers’ Day 2026 on September 15, commemorating the birth anniversary of the eminent engineer, statesman and visionary Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. The celebration was held on the theme “Smart Engineering for a Sustainable Future through Innovation and Digitalisation.”
The celebration brought together students, faculty members and academicians in a spirit of innovation, creativity and learning. Students from USTM and other educational institutions participated enthusiastically in the various activities organised as part of the celebration.
The programme was inaugurated by Prof (Dr) AC Kataki, Director, Medical Administration, PA Sangma International Medical College & Hospital (PIMC), USTM in the presence of dignitaries, faculty members and students. The occasion highlighted the evolving role of engineers in shaping a sustainable future and the need for technology.
Chief Guest, Dr Shyamal Baruah, Chief General Manager, HR, Oil India Limited, Noida, delivered an insightful address on “From RIGS to HR.” Drawing from his professional experience, he shared valuable perspectives on career growth, adaptability and the changing nature of professional life, offering students a broader understanding of how technical education can open diverse pathways for personal and professional development.

The celebration featured several technical and creative competitions, including the Engineering Model Competition, Poster Competition, AI Innovation Challenge and Robo Soccer Competition.
The competitions were evaluated by three distinguished academicians from IIT Guwahati—Dr Satyajit Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering; Dr Tanmay Dutta, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering; and Dr Santu Kar, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering.
Established in 2011, the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) is the first state private university in the field of Science and Technology in North East India. The University was accredited with an ‘A Grade’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in its first cycle of assessment in 2021 and ranked among the top 200 universities by NIRF.
