The Nagaland University Students’ Union (NUSU), Kohima Campus, held its 33rd Freshers’ Meet 2026 at AGOK Badze, Meriema, on September 18 with Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B Henok Buchem, NCS, as the guest speaker. Held on the theme “KAIROS – The Perfect Moment Begins Now,” the programme welcomed the new batch of students and marked the beginning of their university journey.
Speaking on the occasion, Buchem encouraged the freshers to recognise and seize opportunities rather than wait for perfect circumstances. Explaining Kairos as a right, opportune or decisive moment, he urged the students to make the most of their university years through learning, participation and personal growth.
Sharing experiences from his student days and journey into public service, the Deputy Commissioner highlighted the importance of perseverance, preparation, faith and the courage to overcome failure. He recalled his own success in the NPSC examination after an earlier unsuccessful attempt, describing the moment of hearing his name announced among the selected candidates as a deeply significant moment in his life.

Buchem also encouraged students to participate in debates, literary activities, competitions and other opportunities that develop communication and critical-thinking skills. He advised them to use technology and artificial intelligence responsibly, while cautioning against substance abuse, gambling, excessive social media use, misinformation and other distractions.
Emphasising that education carries a responsibility beyond obtaining a degree, he called upon the students to uphold the reputation of Nagaland University through their character, conduct and achievements, and to contribute meaningfully to society and the state.
He also urged senior students and the Students’ Union to extend kindness and guidance to the freshers, fostering a supportive university community.
The programme included an invocation by Meshao Shiu, welcome address by NUSU-KC President Putusunep Jamir, presentation by Information and Publicity Secretary Loviboli Aye, a song by the Department of English, speech on behalf of the freshers by Kivini S. Zhimomi of the Department of Psychology, prayer of blessings by Dr Pucho Kiso, and vote of thanks by General Secretary Jomithung Ngullie. Minuka Pradhan delivered the benediction.
