Around 100 families were affected after a major fire broke out at Kuda Village, B-Khel, Lane 10, Dimapur, on Wednesday afternoon, gutting several bamboo-structure houses.

The fire was reported around 2 p.m., with the Central Fire Station receiving the distress call at about 2.20 pm. The area is largely inhabited by daily wage earners and auto-rickshaw drivers.

No casualties were reported till the filing of this report.

Official sources said that the exact number of houses damaged could not be immediately ascertained, while the cause of the fire was yet to be established. A short circuit was suspected.

Seven fire tenders—six from the Central Fire Station and one from the West Dimapur Fire Station—were deployed to control the blaze, which took nearly two hours to control and douse the fire.

Sources said that most of the occupants, mostly from Bihari community were out of their homes when the fire broke out.

According to the GB, Kuda Village, B Khel, Visasolie Sovino informed that the fire started around 2 p.m. today which affected 15 houses in a row, containing around 220 rooms. He also said that they would approach the Deputy Commissioner seeking compensation for the victims.

Dimapur Auto Drivers Union President, Tito also assured to provide relief to the victims, who are mostly auto drivers. He also informed that one auto driver lost a new vehicle which was brought only today.

It is learnt that around four to five autorickshaws were gutted in the fire.
