The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema, organized a blood donation drive at Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) on September 24 to commemorate the Foundation Day of the National Service Scheme (NSS).
The blood donation programme aimed to raise awareness about voluntary blood donation among students and encourage NSS volunteers to contribute to saving lives through community service.
During the event, Dr Avila Sangtam, MD, Transfusion Medicine, highlighted the importance of voluntary blood donation and explained the health benefits and safety measures associated with donating blood. She informed the volunteers that blood donors undergo several health screenings free of cost, including haemoglobin testing, blood pressure monitoring, and screening for HIV-1 and HIV-2, Syphilis, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Malaria.
She encouraged the volunteers to view blood donation as both a humanitarian service and an opportunity to remain aware of their own health status.
Dr Sangtam also emphasized that voluntary blood donation can provide donors with a sense of fulfilment through their contribution to the lives of people in need. She urged the students to continue supporting voluntary blood donation initiatives in the future.
Er Shanchamo Yanthan, Programme Officer, NSS, appreciated the NSS volunteers for their selfless and noble contribution. He stated, “Their act today will save someone’s life tomorrow.” He reminded the students that being an NSS volunteer means being committed to serving society and placing the needs of others before oneself.

Er Yanthan expressed his gratitude to Dr Ruutuou Sorhie, Managing Director, Naga Hospital Authority Kohima, and Dr Avila Sangtam for facilitating and enabling the NSS volunteers to participate in the blood donation drive. He also expressed his appreciation to the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University for providing logistical support and continuous motivation to the NSS Unit and its volunteers.
The programme reflected the spirit of NSS—“Not Me But You”—by encouraging young students to actively contribute to the welfare of society. The blood donation drive served as a meaningful way for the volunteers to commemorate NSS Foundation Day through an act of service, compassion, and social responsibility.
