A 450-metre-long drain near the Kohima War Cemetery, which had remained blocked for more than a decade, has been cleared following a coordinated effort by the district administration, PWD (NH), Midland Colony residents, Fire and Emergency Services, Revenue officer and other stakeholders.

Deputy Commissioner Kohima B. Henok Buchem, NCS, along with administrative officials and colony leaders, inspected the cleared drain on September 28, 2026.

Speaking during the inspection, Buchem said the prolonged blockage had caused water to overflow onto the road and flow towards the New Market area. He appreciated Midland Colony Chairman and the residents for their cooperation in removing obstructions, including utility pipes, to facilitate the clearance.

Personnel involved in the clearance said the work was carried out over approximately three days, following a series of discussions at the Deputy Commissioner’s office with concerned departments and colony representatives. They said the immediate clearance has restored the flow of water.

The officials described the clearance as a result of coordinated efforts among government departments, contractors, volunteers and local residents, and stressed that regular maintenance would be necessary to keep the drainage system functional.

The Deputy Commissioner appealed to the public of Kohima district to maintain civic responsibility and refrain from dumping plastic bottles, food packets, and other waste into drains or along roadsides. He urged citizens to use designated dustbins and ensure proper waste disposal to prevent the drains from becoming clogged again.
