The Tikhir Tribal Council (TTC) has condemned the reported incidents of violence, vandalism, killings and burning of houses allegedly targeting members of the Tikhir community during the Tsonglaknyi festival celebrations at Zaonger and Longtsunger villages.
In a statement signed by TTC president, RT Kius, general secretary Wongsuthong, executive chairman S Moa Tikhir and secretary RK Tsuthong, the Council said the reported incidents were contrary to the principles of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and brotherhood between the Tikhir and Yimkhiung communities.
The TTC stated that Tsonglaknyi was a traditional and cultural festival of the Tikhir community and maintained that celebrating one’s cultural festival should not cause loss or prejudice to another community. It said any disputes concerning land or other matters in Zaonger and Longtsunger should be resolved through dialogue and established legal and administrative mechanisms rather than violence, intimidation or destruction of property.
The Council said the reported burning of houses, attacks on people and disruption of cultural and religious observances could deepen mistrust and resentment between the two communities without resolving land-related disputes.
Referring to the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation’s (ENPO) declaration of Eastern Nagaland as a peace zone, the TTC said the reported incidents contradicted the spirit of peaceful coexistence and the peace initiatives undertaken in the region.

The Council urged law enforcement agencies and the administration to conduct a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation into the incidents and take action against those found responsible under relevant laws. It also appealed to citizens to support peace and refrain from actions that could further aggravate tensions.
The TTC further urged the state government to provide immediate relief and ex-gratia assistance to the families of the deceased and injured, compensate those whose houses and properties were reportedly damaged or destroyed, and ensure the rehabilitation of affected residents.
Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful dialogue and constitutional and legal processes, the council said it would continue to safeguard the rights, dignity, security and cultural identity of the Tikhir people.
