Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio has stressed the need for coordinated efforts among government departments and local communities to ensure the smooth and successful conduct of the 27th edition of the Hornbill Festival 2026.

Addressing a preparatory meeting at Bamboo Hall, Kisama, on Tuesday, Rio underscored the importance of ensuring good road connectivity, reliable power and water supply, adequate security, efficient traffic management, cleanliness, parking facilities and public conveniences for the festival.

He said he would convene a separate meeting with the departments concerned to discuss road-related issues. The Chief Minister also called upon villages to take responsibility for keeping roads clean, particularly highways passing through or near their areas.

To strengthen coordination and ensure timely action, Rio directed all departments to designate nodal officers for the festival. Emphasising collective responsibility, he urged departments and stakeholders to work diligently and ensure that all necessary arrangements were in place.

Advisor to the Chief Minister, Abu Metha described the Hornbill Festival as Nagaland’s valuable intellectual property and one of the state’s most significant platforms for international engagement and economic activity.

He recalled that the festival, which began as a three-day event, was subsequently expanded to five days and then to ten days. It has since evolved into a major tourism event featuring more than 300 activities across dozens of venues throughout the state.

Metha said the festival had brought Nagaland to the attention of the international community and emerged as an important economic engine for the state. He also highlighted the growing appeal of Hornbill Festival extensions in other districts, which are developing into additional tourist attractions.

Emphasising sustainability, he said the festival should serve as a model for responsible event management through initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, proper waste disposal and the use of renewable energy. He noted that the festival offered an opportunity to demonstrate environmentally responsible practices on a large scale.

Metha also highlighted the importance of international partnerships, roundtable engagements and collaborations in art, music and films, stating that these could create further opportunities to promote Nagaland’s creative economy.

Minister for Tourism, Temjen Imna Along highlighted the growing popularity of mini-Hornbill festivals and the increasing interest among foreign dignitaries in participating in the celebrations.

Commissioner and Secretary for Tourism, Kovi Meyase outlined key logistical requirements, including water supply, sanitation, streamlining of vehicle passes and other arrangements essential for the smooth functioning of the festival.

During the meeting, the Department of Art and Culture presented its preparations concerning cultural troupes and tribal guests, while the Department of Youth Resources and Sports highlighted planned activities, including an e-sports tournament.

Representatives of other line departments also presented their proposed activities and preparations, outlining their respective roles in ensuring the successful conduct of the 27th Hornbill Festival.
