The Leiriechazou Youth Organisation (LCYO) Kohima Sports Meet 2026 commenced at Kigwema Local Ground on October 19 on the theme, “Unite Through Sports: Different Team; One Community.”

Addressing the opening ceremony as the chief guest, Kohima Town Assembly Constituency MLA Dr. Tsielhoutuo (Ato) Rhutso underscored the importance of unity in community development, stating that sports serve as a platform to unite people beyond tribal, religious and social differences.

Pointing to Kohima’s diverse population, Rhutso said the spirit of coexistence demonstrated by localities such as Leirie Chazou could be an example for other communities to follow.

He observed that sports help inculcate values such as dedication, commitment, resilience and respect for opponents. He emphasised that participation and sportsmanship were equally important as winning, adding that sporting events also provide opportunities to foster friendships, strengthen social ties and contribute to community development.

The MLA encouraged youths to strive for academic excellence and acknowledged the contribution of parents towards their children’s success. He also advised them to refrain from harmful habits, particularly tobacco consumption, highlighting its negative impact on health and finances. He urged the younger generation to make positive choices for a better future.

Rhutso also cautioned against allowing political differences to undermine personal relationships, stating that elections are held only once every five years and should not become a reason for lasting hostility among people.

On the 2028 general elections, he expressed his intention to contest and reiterated his commitment to serving society, while noting that the lack of a portfolio had constrained his work during his current tenure.

Earlier, Leirie Chazou Panchayat Chairman Petevilie Livi delivered a short speech, while LCYO President Keneizekho Sopfü delivered the welcome address. Vincent Phimu presented a special song, and Sports Committee Convenor Hubert Aba administered the oath.

The programme was chaired by LCYO Statistical Secretary Josephine Phemu, with Andrew Thong of Faith Harvest Church, South Campus, Leiriechazou, pronouncing the opening prayer.

The sports meet will feature basketball, football and volleyball competitions among the colony’s three sectors, along with tug-of-war and arm wrestling events for both men and women.
