The Asetkong Kaketshir Telungjem Mungdang (AKTM) inaugurated a two-day Skill Development Programme on Self-Sustenance at Kobulong EAC Subdivision on October 19.

Held under the theme “Pei Ketmung ajanga litetba shishashir,” the programme has drawn participation from more than 60 youths and is scheduled to conclude on October 20.

AKTM President Bendangkumzuk said the initiative was organised in accordance with a resolution adopted at the organisation’s 43rd general conference.

He explained that the programme seeks to encourage self-reliance among young people by providing practical skills and creating pathways for self-employment.

According to the president, AKTM believes that the community possesses valuable skills, knowledge and resources that can be developed into sustainable livelihood opportunities.

He expressed hope that the training would inspire participants to become more skilled, independent and self-reliant.

The AKTM Women Coordinator informed that participants are being trained in basket making, preparation of Amzu—a traditional sticky-rice biscuit—tapioca bhujia production and banana chips processing.

She noted that Amzu, a traditional delicacy passed down through generations, is gradually disappearing. Special emphasis has therefore been placed on preserving this cultural heritage while exploring its potential as a marketable local product.

Participants are also learning marketing, photography and video editing to help them promote their products and access wider markets. Resource persons from the local area are sharing indigenous knowledge and practical expertise during the sessions.

On the second day, participants will receive training in shiitake mushroom cultivation. The programme will also include special sessions on business planning, product promotion and marketing linkages through both online and offline platforms.

Through the initiative, AKTM aims to equip youth with practical skills, preserve traditional knowledge and encourage entrepreneurship and self-sustenance, the president added.
