Open House introduces school students to advanced laboratories, emerging technologies and research opportunities

The School of Engineering and Technology (SE&T), Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, Meriema, organised an Open House Day on October 29 to mark its 20th Foundation Day, providing students from local schools and polytechnics an opportunity to explore its academic programmes, laboratory facilities, research infrastructure and technological innovations.

Organised by the Admission Committee for the 2026–27 academic session, the event witnessed the participation of around 20 students from Model Higher Secondary School, Kohima, accompanied by their Physics teacher, Tsüzolü, during the morning session. Ketoulhoukho Kengurusie and Rukuozenuo Mere from Government Polytechnic Kohima also visited the campus along with 17 diploma students from Computer Science and Engineering and Civil Engineering.

The visiting students were introduced to the laboratory facilities, teaching equipment, research infrastructure and technological resources available across the School’s departments.

The Department of Information Technology showcased a robot prototype that was 3D-printed, assembled and controlled through a mobile application developed by Rishabh Kumar, a final-year B.Tech student of Information Technology. Students also experienced virtual reality using a Meta Quest 3S headset at the Computer Graphics and Virtual Reality Laboratory. Visits to the Advanced Computing Laboratory and Machine Learning Laboratories provided further exposure to emerging technologies and advanced computing applications.

A flight simulation demonstration using the PicaSim RC Flight Simulator introduced students to the fundamentals of flight simulation and control.

The Department of Humanities and Basic Sciences displayed laboratory equipment, including an electromagnet, Hall Effect set-up, high-precision touchscreen, Labwan cast iron vacuum oven balance, Millipore machine, incubator with orbital shaker and fume hood. The demonstrations highlighted the role of scientific instrumentation and experimental learning in engineering education.

The Department of Agricultural Engineering and Technology showcased equipment such as a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, texture analyser, sonicator, UV spectrometer, vacuum packaging machine and water quality analyser. The demonstrations introduced students to the application of engineering technologies in agriculture, food processing and quality assessment.

At the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, students observed demonstrations involving a Cathode Ray Oscilloscope (CRO), signal generator with trainer kit and digital trainer kit, gaining insights into electronic circuits, signal analysis and digital systems.

The Department of Biotechnology provided an overview of modern biotechnology research through demonstrations of equipment including a Zeta Sizer, CO₂ incubator, microscope, Shimadzu preparative-cum-analytical high-performance liquid chromatography system, bioreactor, nanofibre electrospinning system, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis system, biosafety cabinet, rotary evaporator, thermal cycler or PCR machine, Eppendorf BioSpectrometer and deep freezers maintained at –80°C and –20°C.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering introduced students to its Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Computer Vision Laboratory and High-Performance Computing server room, highlighting the School’s capabilities in advanced computing, artificial intelligence and research-oriented infrastructure.

During the morning session, Shanchamo Yanthan, Co-convenor of the Admission Committee, highlighted the financial challenges faced by students from Nagaland who pursue higher education outside the state. He encouraged the visitors to make use of the academic programmes, infrastructure and facilities available at SE&T.

He also noted that Nagaland University, as a Central University, offers opportunities for students to pursue higher education within the state.

Dr Imlitoshi Jamir, Convenor of the Admission Committee, said the Open House was intended to provide students from Kohima and neighbouring areas with firsthand exposure to the School’s academic environment and facilities. He added that the initiative formed part of the celebration of its 20th Foundation Day.

Akangjungshi Longkumer, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, briefed the students on the academic programmes offered by the School. He also highlighted opportunities for collaboration between SE&T and polytechnic institutions in research, academic activities and co-curricular programmes.

The Open House showcased the School’s academic progress, infrastructure development, upgraded laboratories and digitally equipped classrooms. It also provided prospective students with practical exposure to engineering education and research opportunities at Nagaland University.

The initiative reaffirmed the School’s commitment to promoting technical education, strengthening engagement with local educational institutions and encouraging students to pursue higher studies in engineering and technology within Nagaland.
