EC commends Nagaland civil organisations’ call for smooth conduct of election in state

The Election Commission (EC) on Monday appreciated the call for smooth conduct of Election in Nagaland. It stated that many Village Councils, Organizations and Unions in the state had passed resolutions like banning of Youth Camps, proxy voting, distribution of money, liquor etc., to ensure clean, fair and peaceful Assembly election.

It also stated that various civil society groups and village councils in Nagaland came forward to appeal for inducement free and ethical elections. Further, a special mention was made to the women’s group in Phek district who set up gates to curb supply of liquor during the election period.

The Commission said that polling in Nagaland went off peacefully and that there was no demand for a re-poll from the state where 11 re-polls were held in the 2018 General Election.

While there are 60 seats in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, polling was held on 59 seats.

Kazheto Kinimi from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged the first official winner of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly election 2023 on 10 February as his lone opponent N. Khekashe Sumi from Indian National Congress withdrew his candidature.

In Nagaland, a total of 3,228 applications for home voting were received from 80+ senior citizens and 173 applications from PwDs with benchmark disability, EC stated, adding that the arrangements made by the Commission to facilitate inclusivity and accessibility received an enthusiastic response and much goodwill by the public of the state.

It was also mentioned that 387 Polling Stations were managed by All-Women teams as part of the Commission’s initiative to provide a comfortable experience to women voters.

Further, it stated that with the objective to inspire young voters to participate in the festival of democracy, the Commission set up polling stations managed completely by the youngest available polling staff/ officials.

With regard to law and order arrangements in the state, EC has said that has been coordinating with all enforcement agencies and State administration of adjoining States too, to make wide-ranging arrangements for ensuring extensive monitoring and law and order arrangements in the states.

A total of 1381 Polling Stations in Nagaland were being monitored online through webcasting, as compared to 488 Polling Stations during the 2018 Assembly Elections, EC declared.

Coordinated efforts of state and central enforcements agencies worked extensively, the state witnessed a record seizure of 50.02 crore, it added. For the first time, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had set up a Camp Office in Kohima, EC informed.

The Commission also stated that inorder encourage proactive and citizen centric reporting by the citizens, on Model of Conduct Code violations, the cVigil App was widely publicized by the office of the CEO/ DEO and citizens were encouraged to turn up in large numbers at their nearest polling stations and to collectively strive to contribute to a higher voter turnout than 2018 Assembly elections.
