Minister for PHED and Cooperation, Jacob Zhimomi, on Wednesday called for the department of cooperation to work for the cause of the people and do justice for all sections of the people.
He stated this while addressing a meeting of the department at the Registrar of Cooperative Societies’ office in Kohima during his visit to the department on his charge as the minister in-charge.
Zhimomi pointed out that the department has entered the social fabric of the society with huge scope to work for the upliftment of the society. He also told the officers and staff to collectively work to yield the best results for the people while he also emphasized on the need to have a strong team.
The minister also highlighted the need to explore new arenas such as piggery stating that Nagas are meat lovers and that there is huge fiscal responsibility for meat procurement wherein huge revenues are being siphoned off outside the state.
He also mooted for the need to have a meeting with the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services in order to have a collective responsibility.

Commending on the ‘One Village, One Cooperative Society’ module, Zhimomi stressed on the need to streamline the non-performing cooperative societies.
Further he also implored on the need to have the department’s own building in the newly created districts while also pointing out the need to prioritize giving vehicles to the officers in the far flung/ interior districts to perform their duties.
Speeches were also delivered by Commissioner and Secretary, Government of Nagaland, Sehjang Doungel and Registrar of Co-operative societies Nagaland, Temjen Longkumer.
Deputy Registrar of Co-operative societies, Bokato Hesso gave introduction of the officer while he also presented an overview of the department of cooperation stating that the department was formed in 1965 bifurcating from Agriculture department.
He informed that as on 31 January 2023 there are 8877 registered cooperative societies and 7 state level cooperative societies.
Hesso also pointed out that the construction of a new directorate building at Pheregei, Kohima was taken up in 2012 and is on the verge of completion. Further he also highlighted the programmes such as Integrated Cooperative Development Project (ICDP) and Computerization of Primary Agriculture Credit Cooperatives (PACS).
