A two-day Tribal Artisan Mela (TAM) will be conducted in Nagaland for the first time on 9-10 May 2023 in Wokha district by the Tribal Co-operative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. In this regard, a meeting was held on Saturday where Anuranjan Singh, Skill Development Officer, Wokha highlighted about the aims and objectives of the mela.

Singh said that TAM aims in identifying new artisans and new products in States/Districts/Villages for expansion of tribal producers’ base to highlight the art creatures and products of tribal origins of different communities and empower individuals to become self-employed.

Singh encouraged Individuals (ST)/SHGs/Societies/FPOs in the District to come forward and participate in the upcoming Mela Exhibition, exhibit one’s own product while receiving feedback on how to improve the quality of the products in a better way from the TRIFED.

Speaking to Nagaland Tribune, Singh said that Wokha, ‘the Land of Plenty’, besides having everything lacks exposure and marketing ‘to send and sell our product’s and getting this kind of opportunity from the Government of India, the people should not miss the chance but grab the opportunity which will help in boosting the economy as well as bring changes in the district.

Singh further said that artisans can exhibit the following items during the mela – textiles and handloom, metal crafts, jewellery, organic food, and paintings.

He said that the item/product samples will be taken to Guwahati Regional Office where they will be tested for which the process will take two months. If the product successfully passes the quality, the work order will be given to the certain artisans or Tribal members and then products can be put in retail outlets, and exhibitions of products will also be done and later put up in the E-commerce portal.

The Skill Development Officer urged artisans not to feel discouraged if their products are not selected but learn from the feedbacks on how to improve the quality of the products. This collaboration will go a long way in promoting tribal products and strengthening livelihood opportunities for tribal artisans of the district and the entire North Eastern Region added Anuranjan.
