Nagaland University Students Union (NUSU), Kohima campus, Meriema celebrated their 19th parting social on Friday at RCEMPA, Jotsoma.

The program was graced as chief guest by prof G T Thong, Pro Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University. In his speech, while wishing the best to the outgoing students as they depart, he said that it will be a long journey “a voyage fraught with hardship” but encouraged them to work hard. Success in life will always remain humankind’s most important goal, but for which you have to really struggle. Only hard work can polish you, and help you make it through, Thong said, adding that the sweetest success comes after great challenges.

“As life becomes more challenging, some people thrive. Going through tough times is not easy, but through the blood, sweat, and tears, you will surely rise higher than where you started. To achieve your goal, you have to sacrifice time and energy. If you can bear the pain, rest assured of a good life ahead,” he said.

Thong also advised the students to successfully negotiate though life and to pick up other skills besides their degrees. He mentioned, “Taking up a computer course, for instance, during your free time after the final exams, may be of great help in future, because most organisations today need experts in computer applications. You have a wide range of options, but you have to compete against numerous others, the best, like you.”

Giving a reality check to the students, the Pro VC stated that the government sector is almost saturated, and thousands compete for a few vacancies but there are jobs in the private sector. Entrepreneurship is other option, he reminded. “Jobs exist everywhere, but opportunities come only to the challenge-takers. Some of you should also think of jobs with multi-national companies, the various State and Central Civil Services, etc. The Combined Armed Police Forces (AR, BSF, CISF, RPF, CRPF, ITBF, NSG, and SSB) is a very good option. Your life may be out there, but if you try,” he advised outgoing students during the NUSU parting social.

“We come from different economic and social backgrounds, but does it really matter? Nothing should deter anyone from climbing to the top. Success comes to those who are diligent. The great inventor, Thomas Alva Edison, had very little formal education, but was very studious. Adolf Hitler, a weak student in school, was also an ordinary soldier. After the 1st world war however, he soon headed the Nazi party and later became the absolute ruler of Germany. The movie Slumdog Millionaire portrays the ‘rags to riches’ rise of a boy from the slums of Mumbai. This movie has a simple message – each of us possesses the grit and enterprise. However unfortunately, very few are willing to use these gifts,” Thong further said.

“To achieve success, you have to be assiduous,” he exhorted. Stating that Nagaland is grossly underdeveloped due to extreme corruption and inefficiency, Thong urged the students to stop dreaming, to be united with like-minded people and organisations, and to fight for what is rightly theirs. “You have to work – hard, unceasingly, and persistently,” he added.

Earlier the program was blessed with invocation by Moochipen N Chang, presidential address by NUSU president Chingshau. Speech on behalf of the students was given by Shanchoi B Buchem, special performance was given by Erale Pame Marline Thonger followed with benediction by Ashom Vetolyn. The program was chaired by Vinotoli Sumi.
