Joining hands with the rest of the country in “Meri Life, Mera Swachh Shehar” project launched under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), a RRR centre (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle centre) has also been set up by Ward no. 17 – Upper Agri Colony, Kohima at Upper Agri Panchayat Hall.

The colony’s Panchayat chairman, Mhasisalie Solo mentioned that people have been depositing their reusable items such as clothes, electronics, books, utensils and other unused, used products in the RRR centre. He added that people are not only donated but also pick reusable items.

He said that this program was launched by the Kohima Municipal Council on 19 May 2023 where they requested each ward to start the movement of RRR from 26 May to 5 June.

Solo said the ward had started collecting and had segregated all items in different sections. Items such as electronics, clothes, utensils, shoes and children’s toys to make it easier for public to both donate and pick the items they needed. He said he was very happy to see the positive response and participation of the people. He said there was nothing to be ashamed in donating old or recycled items in the centre nor be ashamed to pick anything that one needed from the centre.

With the aim to let all people participate at their own convenient time, the Panchayat chairman said that they had kept the RRR centre open 24/7 everyday where people can donate their reusable /unusable items and or pick at the same time. Keeping it open day and night will help the people to freely donate when they wanted and pick too because there are situations where somebody wants to donate but is not comfortable and someone might want to pick up items but might not be comfortable.

He requested everyone to participate in this movements because this has been very helpful to many. Solo said that this way waste can be reduced while at the same time helping one another by exchanging our reusable products.

Further, he mentioned that this was a very good initiative taken by the government and hope this does not end here but continue.  He said this movement is a perfect example of the saying, “One man-trash is another man’s treasure”. Everyone is welcome to participate, either by donating or picking, he added.

Solo said the remaining product which are not pick by the public will be send to KMC office Kohima for further recycling.

RRR program was recently launched in various parts of Nagaland including Kohima. The Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) in collaboration with Kohima Smart City Development Limited initiated the ‘Meri Life Mera Swachh Shehar’ campaign, introducing RRR centres in six wards on 19 May.

These centres were launched to reduce waste generation in India. They serve as a one stop solution for citizens, institutions, commercial enterprises, etc to deposit unused or used stuffs.

The items will be given to different stakeholders to be refurbished for reuse or would be made into new products contributing to a circular economy.
