Dimapur: Residents say flooding a common occurrence in Dimapur with onset of monsoon

Residents of Dimapur on June 11 witnessed heavy downpour leading to waterlogging, clogged drains in several colonies, especially in town areas. The worst affected areas include East Police Colony, Khermahal, Dhobinala, Legrijan and Supermarket.

The heavy downpour also became a nightmare to many families as they had to leave their homes and take shelter in hotels and with their relatives.

Nagaland Tribune visited the affected areas in Dimapur and spoke to a few residents in East Police Colony who said flooding is a common occurrence in Dimapur every year with the onset of monsoon season.

Chinghong, a resident of East Police Colony, said due to the flood, his family had a difficult time and had to sleep in a hotel. He mentioned that when they arrived this morning, the water had receded however, the area remains flooded.

Last year also we faced the same situation, we were hoping to get help from the state government, but we did not till date. The colony Chairman gave us dry rations last year, but we are yet to receive any this year, said Chinghong.

Nyukon Phom told Nagaland Tribune that due to the heavy downpour, water had entered their rooms leading to damage of some of their household items and clothes. She said that she has not been able to attend her classes and training due to the situation.

Chuphenla, expressing her problem due to the inundate, said she could not sleep last night and had to take shelter in a hotel. All my clothes were drenched in the water, and I couldn’t attend school today, she complained.

She also hoped that the state government will extend help to the affected people.
