35 out of 69 colleges in Nagaland accredited by NAAC

Kohima: At least 695 universities and over 34,000 colleges across India operating without accreditation

National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited 35 colleges in Nagaland out of the total 69 colleges under its purview, a DIPR report stated. Of the 35 NAAC Accredited colleges, 13 are government run while 22 are private.

According to the report there are in total 15 government colleges and 54 private colleges in the state. It also informed that the remaining 34 non-Accredited colleges are in the process of NAAC assessment.

Earlier this year in February, Union Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar had shared in Lok Sabha that “As per information received from the UGC, out of the 1,113 universities and 43,796 colleges, NAAC has accredited 418 universities and 9,062 colleges.” He also informed that at least 695 universities and over 34,000 colleges across the country are operating without accreditation.

On 5 March 2023, NAAC chairperson Bhushan Patwardhan had resigned after alleging that universities were obtaining questionable grades through unfair means. In a letter to the UGC chairman in February, Patwardhan alleged that “vested interests and malpractices” were leading to some higher educational institutes obtaining “questionable grades”.

National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) is a government organisation in India that Assess and Accredit Higher Education Institutions to derive an understanding of the “Quality” status of the Institute. It is an autonomous body funded by the University Grant Commission (UGC) and headquartered in Bangalore.

NAAC has played a significant role in the growth and development of Higher Education in India. Its efforts have led to the improvement of the quality of education in the country and it continues to work towards promoting excellence in Higher Education Institution.
