Tobacco seized and destroyed at Khongka village in Pungro

Kiphire: Selling any tobacco and liquor in prohibited in Khongka village since 2008

The Khongka village under Pungro sub-division Kiphire held a surprise checking of shops in its jurisdiction on Friday seizing tobacco products. Khongka Students’ Union made a resolution in 2008 making tobacco and tobacco products illegal.

The resolution strictly prohibits any individual or groups from selling any tobacco and liquor in the village area to be dealt with severe actions along with imposition of penalty.

Thrunso R, president, Khongka students union said, “We are doing our best to make our village and citizens free from the negative impact of any tobacco products and liquor since the time we took up the resolution in the year 2008”.

“Today we can proudly say that our initiative for the betterment of the villagers have brought a huge improvement in the lifestyle of people though there are few who choose to adapt the bad habits below the radar”, he added.

The resolution also restricts anyone in and around the campus who is seen/ observed inhaling any tobacco products to be given tight penalty.

The students’ union president further mentioned, “To be honest in the past years many young and old villagers were chewing tobacco frequently without knowing the ill-effect of the products, but today most people in my village are aware of the bad consequences and most of them are happy to have put their bad habits away, with collective strong affirmation and efforts of the stakeholders.”
