State Level Teachers’ Day organised by the Department of School Education, Government of Nagaland was celebrated today at NBCC Convention Centre, Kohima. The Special Guest, Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, Advisor, School Education and SCERT acknowledged the service of teachers but lamented that they were often under appreciated despite of giving their best.
On the occasion of Teachers’ Day 2023, the advisor made some major announcements:
- Schools in the state, both government and private, will not have regular classes on Saturdays.
“Saturdays will be strictly observed as holidays. Teachers are not slaves – they cannot afford to spend six days a week teaching. They need time for their families. Children too need time and environment that is outside the classroom for wholistic development,” Dr Yhome said.
- First preference for admission to government higher secondary schools will be given to students coming from government high schools. The advisor said that memorandum of agreement to this effect will be signed soon between government schools.

- All schools in state, private and government, will follow a scheduled Sports Week. District Level, Inter-District to All-Nagaland Sports Meet will be conducted to identity and groom talents to represent State nationally and internationally. “The Department is already in talk with the Nagaland Olympic Association, the Department of Youth Resource and Sports, to pool together resources toward conducting Common Sports,” the advisor informed.
- Schools in rural areas encouraged to start classes early, depending on the season. Dr Yhome said that schools can start their classes by 6:00 am since a lot of morning hours is wasted due to inordinate time zone.
- School establishments and teachers called upon to wage War on Drugs which is affecting the society and children.
- Starting 2024, it will be mandatory for all to have ‘School Children Health Card’, which will be introduced in collaboration with the Department of Health and Family Welfare. Dr Yhome said that this card will allow every child to get medical attention at the door step of their schools.
- To bring dignity to Head of Institutions, the nomenclature Teacher-in-Charge will be done away with for Primary Schools. The advisor said that a new designation will be notified from the next academic year.
- Common Teachers Training in the pipeline. Consultations with SCERT, NBSE, Samagra Shiksha, and other line departments are in the process to prevent duplication, Dr Yhome further announced.
18 teachers from across Nagaland were honoured during today’s Teachers’ Day program. Each awardee were presented certificates and an amount of Rs 15,000 in recognition of their dedication to their service.

Commissioner & Secretary, Department of School Education & SCERT, Kevileno Angami in her greetings highlighted the history of Teachers’ Day. She expressed her respect to the teachers who walked extra mile to transform the lives of the learners and who have contributed to the development of the state.
“To become a teacher, mentor and guide calls for dedication and commitment, patience, passion to help students grow and attain their full potential, readiness to walk the extra mile, work beyond call of duty and many more responsibilities,” she said.
Angami maintained that the knowledge and wisdom gained by students translate to welfare of the people and the society. She said, the growth and development of our State and the milestones achieved thus far is due to the education and knowledge imparted by teachers in the students who have grown up to be policy makers, technical experts and leaders of the State.
The commissioner paid tributes to teachers for imparting knowledge, shaping minds, nurturing talents and instilling the confidence to face the world. She said teachers lay the foundation for imbibing knowledge, values, wisdom to discern right and wrong in young malleable minds.
Kevileno Angami appealed to all teachers to be role models, not only transacting knowledge, but instil values, ethics, critical and creative thinking, problem solving skills and encourage the children to think out of the box. The commissioner also reminded the teachers that incredible feats and goals can be achieved if we are committed to making them happen.

Governor of Nagaland La Ganesh and Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio also conveyed their wishes to the teachers in the State through their Teachers’ Day messages.
A life sketch of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was presented by Chandmari Hr Sec school, Kohima.
Earlier, welcome address was pronounced by Thavaseelan. K, IAS Principal Director, School Education. The program was blessed with invocation by Rev. Fr. Vemedo Kezo, while GMS Krouliezou, Kohima led the congregation in National Anthem.
Government Hr Sec School, Jotsoma, Vinyüzo Hr Sec School, Moko Koza and Virie enlightened the crowd with special presentations.
Dr. Wonthungo Tsopoe, Director, School Education presented the concluding remark.
The program was followed by the launch of Vidya Samiksha Kendra (VSK) by Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, Advisor, School Education and SCERT. VSK is a centralized management system aimed at monitoring the real-time status of various projects and activities within the School Education Department and its sister organizations. The VSK’s primary objective is to provide valuable insights and recommendations to enhance the educational system and ensure improved learning outcomes for students.
Keeping the Teachers’ Day tradition in Nagaland, the advisor declared tomorrow as holiday for all schools across State.
