State-Wide Mega Mock Drill on November 2: Public reminded not to panic

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department will be conducting the Nagaland Emergency Preparedness Exercise (NEPEx), a State-wide mega mock exercise on November 2. The exercise will be conducted on an earthquake scenario with a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale. This exercise is being carried out to test the capability of the State to respond to and manage any disaster, informed the DIPR.

A siren bell will be sounded from the PHQ at 09:03 AM, further sirens will also be used by emergency vehicles participating in the drill. In this regard, the public is being requested not to panic but to cooperate for the smooth conduct of the exercise.

Tabletop Exercises and coordination meetings in preparation for mega mock exercise on earthquake disaster held in various districts           

The Kohima District held a Tabletop Exercise at the DC’s Conference Hall on November 1 in view of holding Mega Mock Exercise on Earthquake Disaster on November 2.

Deputy Commissioner, Kohima, Kumar Ramnikant, during the Tabletop Exercise, urged all the stakeholders to have clarity on their assigned responsibility and take the Mock Exercise very seriously as if we are handling a real time scenario of the natural disaster since Nagaland Emergency Preparedness Exercise (NEPEx) is being organised statewide to test state’s preparedness and its response in the real time scenario. The DC also informed general public not to panic when the Siren is sounded but to co-operate for the said Exercise.

Superintendent of Police, Kohima, Bharat Laxman, who also spoke asked the stakeholders to not take this exercise as a normal annual event but give cent percent seriousness by visualising the real time situation when undertaking the Mock Exercise.

Assistant Manager NSDMA and Nodal Officer for Kohima District, Theja Zao gave a brief introduction of the Mock Exercise and overview of Incident Response System (IRS). The Kohima District will stage a simulating earthquake of 7.1 magnitude.

A coordination meeting was held today at the DC Office Conference Hall in Peren in preparation for the upcoming Annual Mock Exercise for Disaster Management Preparedness to be held in Peren Town on November 2.

According to DIPR,  in the coordination meeting, Deputy Commissioner of Peren, Vineet Kumar IAS, underscored the importance of readiness in dealing with emergencies and disaster mitigation. He emphasized the significance of reducing the impact of disasters through proactive preparedness. Kumar further conveyed to the district officers that preparedness should be carried out before a crisis occurs, and stressed on the steps required for disaster preparedness, which include identifying risks, creating a disaster safety plan, and practicing safety measures for dealing with disasters.

As part of the mock exercise preparations, the Police Department conducted a demonstration of radio handsets and walkie-talkies to all the district officers attending the meeting. These communications tools are crucial for effective coordination during emergency situations.

This coordination meeting plays a vital role in ensuring that Peren Town and the surrounding areas are well-prepared to respond to potential disasters and emergencies, with the aim of safeguarding the safety and well-being of the local community.
