7th Edition of Late Capt N Kenguruse MVC Memorial Football Tournament begins

The Assam Rifles in collaboration with Nagaland Football Association organised the opening ceremony of the 7th Edition of Late Capt N Kenguruse, Mahavir Chakra, Memorial Football Tournament at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima, Nagaland on November 1. The tournament is being organised as part of Op Sadbhavana by Spear Corps, informed a press release by the Assam Rifles.

The opening ceremony was graced by Chief Guest Maj Gen Vikas Lakhera, SM, IG AR (N), Brig Herjinder Singh, DIG 5 Sect Assam Rifles, Mr & Mrs Neiselie Kenguruse, parents of Capt N Kenguruse, K Neibou  Sekhose, President, NFA & Mr Kevingutuo Sekhose, Head of Referees.  The primary aim of the tournament is to remember the immortal brave heart of Nagaland who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty during Operation Vijay (Kargil War) and promote sportsmanship spirit amongst the youth of Nagaland.

A total of 16 teams from twelve districts of the state are participating in the nine day long tournament from November 1 to November 9. The winners and  runners up trophy were unveiled during the ceremony in addition to the individual prizes which included the trophies for Golden Boot, Golden Gloves, Best Mid Fielder and Defender respectively. The winning team will be awarded a cash prize of Rs Two Lakhs, apart from the coveted Rolling trophy.

During the opening ceremony, the Chief Guest highlighted the gallant acts of Capt N Kenguruse, Mahavir Chakra during Operation Vijay and thanked his parents for gracing the event. He also thanked Nagaland Football Association for collaborating with Assam Rifles for conducting the tournament. He conveyed his best wishes on behalf to Lt Gen H S Sahi, AVSM, YSM, SM, GOC, 3 Corps to all the participating teams.

Neiselie Kenguruse, father of Capt N Kenguruse also addressed the gathering & expressed his gratitude toward Assam Rifles for organising the event. “The Ceremony was peppered with musical interludes performed by Assam Rifles Band, Ms Mengu Suokhire and NOMAD Band,” informed the press release.

The opening match played between Tiema-Khe Kidima FC (Kohima) and Lozu FC (Zunheboto) was won by Tiema-Khe Kidima FC (Kohima). The entire tournament is being organised by Assam Rifles in collaboration with Nagaland Football Association to celebrate the sportsmanship spirit of Nagas, their love for football and to foster bonhomie and bonding between Indian Armed Forces and Naga population.
