New era of peace to begin for NER and Assam: Amit Shah after Agreement of Settlement signed with ULFA

New Delhi: Modi hails Agreement as significant milestone in Assam’s journey towards peace and development

The Government of India and the Government of Assam signed a Memorandum of Settlement with the representatives of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), in New Delhi on 29th December 2023. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah witnessed the signing of the Agreement and remarked that it is a golden day for Assam when peace is going to be established in Northeast and Assam.

He said that under the tripartite agreement, ULFA representatives have agreed to abjure path of violence, lay down all their arms and ammunition and disband their armed organisation. Apart from this, ULFA has also agreed to vacate all camps occupied by its armed cadres, engage in the peaceful democratic process established by law and maintain the integrity of the country.

The Union Home Minister mentioned that the conflict between the State and ULFA has caused the deaths of about ten thousand people from both sides. Shah said that a time-bound program will be made by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, to fulfill the demands of ULFA and a committee will also be formed for its monitoring

He further said that since the formation of the Modi government in 2014, peace has been established in large part of the Northeast. In Assam, violent incidents have decreased by 87%, deaths by 90% and kidnappings by 84%. He said that so far 7500 cadres have surrendered in Assam alone, which will have addition of 750 more today, thus the surrender of over 8200 cadres in Assam alone is the beginning of a new era of peace.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the Agreement as “a significant milestone in Assam’s journey towards peace and development”. He said that this agreement “paves the way for lasting progress in Assam.”
