A massive landslide caused major damages at Changchore village under Amahator Area, Kiphire yesterday.

Occurring around 6:30pm after heavy rains, two houses were completely damaged and swept away along with a granary and a rice mill. Heavy damage was also caused to the village community water pump.

A mother and son suffered injuries from the disaster – the mother with severe injuries while the son had minor injuries. The two have been admitted to District Hospital, Kiphire.

According to sources, there is only one nurse posted at Amahator Primary Health Centre (PHC) who was found to be absent at the time of the incident. The injured victims were unable to receive basic first aid care.

The citizens of Amahator are strongly demanding the government of Nagaland to intervene in the matter of much needed human resources for the area – to appoint a proper doctor and enough nurses for Amahator PHC. With the possibility of future disasters being ever imminent, there is an urgent need to prepare proper healthcare facilities and human resources, not a physical structure with a sign board of PHC, should be available for the public of Amahator area, the Amahator citizens say.

Speaking to Nagaland Tribune, the Village Council Chairman (VCC) informed that the District Disaster Management team has recruited JCB equipment and is today working out in clearing the site of the incident.

It is worth mentioning that the landslide has also blocked the highway that serves as the lifeline link between Changchore village and the district headquarters Kiphire.
