Kiphire Forest Division marked World Ozone Day by organising an awareness programme at Trinity High School on 16 September. The UN themed this year’s Ozone Day ‘Montreal Protocol @35’, commemorating the 35th year of the Montreal Protocol.

Bendangtemsu, Forest Range Officer (FRO), Kiphire Division spoke on the significance of the Ozone Layer and the adverse effects of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS).

The headmaster of the school, Zulu Ao, in a short speech told the attendees about the Montreal Protocol. He said that the Montreal Protocol was a global agreement to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production and consumption of ODS. The Montreal Protocol ended one of the biggest threats humanity has ever faced as a whole: the depletion of the ozone layer.

The Montreal Protocol is regarded as one of the most successful international environmental agreements in history. 197 countries agreed to fight together for the Planet Earth and became the first treaty in the history of the United Nations to achieve universal ratification – also considered by many the most successful environmental global action.

In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16 September the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

A Quiz competition was also organised for class 10 students of Trinity High School on the topic ‘Ozone Layer’.
