Kisan Mela and Farmers Scientist Interaction Programme held in Peren’s Tening

Tening: Plant Biodiversity Conservation, PPVFRA, importance of KVK centre, among topics discussed at Kisan Mela

A Kisan Mela and Farmers Scientist Interaction programme was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Peren, ICAR, Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Center, Jalukie along with a Plant Genetic Resources Conservation Awareness program in collaboration with National Bureau of Plant Genetics Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi at New Town Hall, Tening Town on 22nd February 2024. DIPR informed that Additional Deputy Commissioner, Tening, Lemlila Sangtam and Principal ACTO (PBG) KVK Peren, scientist Dr D P Samwal, ICAR NBPG New Delhi attended the programme as Special Guest and Guest of Honour respectively.

Speaking at the occasion, the ADC encouraged the farmers community to be more sustainable and progressive. She appreciated the participation of women farmers in the programme and further emphasized on strengthening the Farmers Production Organisation (FPO) as well as blending of local farmers’ methods and bringing out a comprehensive growth along with scientific research technology.

Principal Scientist, Dr D P Samwal speaking on Plant Genetic Resources and Conservation, emphasized on the importance of Kisan Mela and its benefits for the farmers community.

EAC Tening, Wabang Aier also spoke on PM Vishwakarma program for assistance to artisans and craftspeople and its registration drive for Tening area.

During the Technical Session and Group Discussion, Dr Soyim Chiten, Scientist, NBPGR, Delhi spoke about Plant Biodiversity Conservation in the context of Nagaland while Dr Harendra Verma, Scientist PBG, ICAR Nagaland centre spoke on Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Right Authority (PPVFRA), its objective and benefits for farmers. Dr Patu K Zeliang and Z James Kikon also spoke on the importance of KVK Centre and its different Projects for the farmers’ community.

The Kisan Mela and Awareness Program on Plant Genetic Resources conservation program was attended by officials from Agri. & Allied Dept, Village Council Chiefs and farmer representatives from twenty villages under Tening, Sub Division, Goanburas, Dobashis, Youth Organisation and Women welfare Organizations from Tening Town and village totalling 147 participants.

The programme started with an invocation by GB Mbaupungchi, Igonglung followed by a welcome note addressed by PS & Head KVK Jalukie, Dr KL Meena. Dr Patu K. Zeliang chaired the program and also highlighted the theme of the programme and Z James Kikon, CTO (Soil Science) KVK Peren delivered the vote of thanks.
